Customs officials at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport have announced that over 300kg of elephant tusks were, this morning, confiscated.
Officials were inspecting the cargo from an Ethiad flight that arrived from United Arab Emirates on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement by Truong Giang, the deputy director of the Hanoi Customs Division.
The tusks had been listed as hydraulic toughened glass on the import papers and signed for by a Vietnamese company.
Vietnam is a regular hub for African ivory, usually on its way to China. Seven tonnes were seized in 2009 in what is Vietnam’s largest haul.
SE Asia’s illegal ivory trade continues to be a major threat to the elephant populations in Africa.
The value of each kilogram ranges between 750 and 1200 US Dollars.
