The BBC agree to play 'God Save the Queen' after Newsnight

BBC’s Newsnight finished their programming last night by playing Sex Pistols‘ ‘God Save the Queen’.

Conservative MP Andrew Rossindell called on the channel to play the national anthem, ‘God Save the Queen’ as a symbolic gesture to mark Britain’s impending exit from the European Union.

Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark mentioned Rossindell’s requests before stating; “Well we’re not BBC One and it’s not quite the end of the day but we’re incredibly happy to oblige. Good night”.

The programme then played Sex Pistols’ ‘God Save the Queen’. You can watch below.

Rossindell has also requested that the channel play the national anthem on BBC One before it switches over to BBC News 24.

According to insiders, the BBC turned down Rossindell’s request on the basis that it already plays the national anthem at appropriate times and because “it (BBC One) doesn’t close down in the evening”.
