President Donald Trump has ruled in line with a recommendation from the National Archives to keep certain documents regarding former President John F. Kennedy out of public circulation.
According to the Associated Press, the White House circulated a memo Thursday explaining why Trump decided to block hundreds of documents related to Kennedy’s assassination from being released.
The documents are “of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in immediate disclosure,” Trump wrote, explaining that both the FBI and the CIA supported his decision. He’s directed both agencies to review the files over the next three years and determine which information may be of public interest.
Back in October, Trump blocked the distribution of some of the JFK papers that Congress ordered to release back in 1992. However, the president tweeted multiple times chronicling the intrigue surrounding the documents.
“The long anticipated release of the #JFKFiles will take place tomorrow. So interesting!” Trump tweeted in late October.
“JFK Files are being carefully released. In the end there will be great transparency. It is my hope to get just about everything to public!” he added.
A White House statement at the time said that “the president believes that these documents should be made available in the interests of full transparency unless agencies provide a compelling and clear national security or law enforcement justification otherwise.”
One of the documents released revealed that the CIA intercepted a call Lee Harvey Oswald made to a KGB officer at the Russian Embassy in Mexico a few shorts months before he murdered Kennedy.
Another claimed that the FBI “received a call in our Dallas office from a man talking in a calm voice and saying he was a member of a committee organized to kill Oswald” shortly after he was taken into custody.
